For all cultures the moon is one of the most prominent and ancient of symbols. Its appearance in the sky influences how we understand and track time and represents the rhythm of life within all things. The lunar cycle is made up of eight distinct phases, all of which have associations with different states of being – from new beginnings to harvest to new beginnings once again. Allen’s interest in the natural phenomena in the sky and the moon’s qualities of fluidity, creativity, femininity, and change prompted this maquette that was a study for a larger work never completed.
