Corn Maiden
2008 , recycled steel, scrap metal, custom patina, 96″ x 40” x 3”
Physical representations of the Corn Mother story are found in many indigenous tribes of North and South America. Maize brings the bounty of life and can be seen dancing as it grows in the breeze. It also has ceremonial uses offering strength, creation and wisdom. Once moving to the SW, Allen’s interest in Native American legend and beliefs inspired him in his own work. Two years later he created another sculpture ‘The Maize Family’ in honor of the life force that creates a new harvest each year.
