Chac Mool

Chac Mool

2011, new and recycled steel, scrap metal, and cast bronze, custom patinas, 50″ x 108” x 40”

Inspired by indigenous cultures and their connection to the earth, Chac Mool calls forth a timeless image by combining contemporary materials with ancient symbolism. Interpretations stretch from sacrifice, to rebirth and renewal, to the attentive listener. In his fascination with this image, Allen intentionally added an oil lamp to the offering bowl to create an Aladdin-like quality to his sculpture. This combination of steel and bronze is rarely seen together because the two metals are not readily compatible since they have completely different characteristics which require additional care & welding.

Entered at Art Prize in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan – September 21 to October 9, 2011.
